Everyone and their mom's dog is starting to hear about CBD and there is a lot of confusing information out there making it hard to know what's fact and what's fake news. Don't worry friends, we're here to give you answers so that the next time your at that family BBQ and your Aunt Sue asks if you've heard of this new phenomenon called CBD, you'll know just what to say.
The Basics:CBD stands for Cannabidiol, which is just one of over 100 naturally occurring Phytocannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant. CBD is closely related to the most famous of these phytocannabinoids - THC - but there are some major differences between the two medicinally activated compounds. THC is psychoactive, meaning it's the part of the plant that makes you high. CBD is not psychoactive, so it does not produce any sort of high or intoxicating effect. These differences occur because CBD and THC interact differently on different receptors in the body.
So how does it work? Well, this is where it starts to get fascinating (come through miracles of the human body). In the 1990s, something called Anandamide was discovered as the first endogenous cannabinoid or endocannabinoid in the human body. What this means is that our bodies have naturally occurring compounds that mimic those present in the cannabis plant. The discovery of these endocannabinoids leads to the further discovery of our wider endocannabinoid system. This is essentially a molecular signaling system that provides metabolic pathways for phytocannabinoids to work their magic in our vast systems. Even though the Cannabis plant was discovered long before this system, this cellular process has been happening within our bodies for millions of years! Since this discovery, the scientific world has found out that the endocannabinoid system is responsible for maintaining most of our normal bodily functions.
In fact, it may be the most important system within our entire bodies because it's main responsibility is keeping homeostasis. Basically, if our endocannabinoid system is off, your whole body is going to be off as well. Scientifically then it makes complete sense that supplementing our endocannabinoid system with cannabinoids from the plant would help balance out symptoms across the complete spectrum of physical and mental health. So, next time Aunt Sue says CBD can't possibly treat all of the symptoms and disorders it's advertised to, you'll know how to politely school her.
If you take one thing away from the endocannabinoid system, its that it regulates our mood, energy, intestinal fortitude, immune activity, blood pressure, bone density, glucose metabolism, how we experience pain, stress, hunger, and more. Cutting-edge science has shown that the endocannabinoid system is dysregulated in nearly all pathological conditions. Thus, it stands to reason that “modulating endocannabinoid system activity may have therapeutic potential in almost all diseases affecting humans,” as Pal Pacher and George Kunos, scientists with the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) found through their studies.
In the simplest terms, putting CBD into our bodies feeds our endocannabinoid system, our main regulatory system, and keeps it balanced and healthy which keeps the rest of our body happy and healthy.
Now, all of that is great, but not all CBD is created equal and there are many different forms of it available for consumption. It is a hot topic of debate in the industry on what forms are best or preferable, but the truth is that every one is different and CBD is such a personalized thing that you can't really standardize what's best for everyone. The main forms that you're likely to hear about are CBD Isolate versus Full Spectrum CBD.
Full Spectrum CBD refers to products that contain CBD alongside other plant molecules. Full Spectrum formulas are minimally refined, which leaves most of the other plant matter in tact in the final product. Full Spectrum can be an incredible medicine, but its important to know if you are using Full Spectrum CBD derived from Hemp or from Cannabis. We learned that Cannabis contains tons of phytocannabinoids, but it also has other compounds like terpenes that are responsible for the different flavors and qualities of Cannabis strains. Cannabis is rich with high potency terpenes and cannabinoids, whereas Hemp produces much lower quantities of these compounds. This just means that Hemp derived Full Spectrum products are not going to be as potent, pure or terpene and cannabinoid rich as the Cannabis derived alternative. It is becoming more common to find brands using labels like "cannabinoid-rich hemp oil' and since we just learned that hemp is not naturally rich with these compounds this points to genetically modified growing methods. This is why its so important to know your stuff before spending your hard earned cash!
CBD Isolate is simply the isolated CBD compound. The CBD is separated from all of the other cannabinoids and extracted in its purest form. CBD isolate is 99% or more pure and is activated. CBD isolate has been researched more and more and stands out from the rest as having the biggest medicinal and therapeutic benefit. In our experience, CBD isolate is faster absorbing and faster acting due to the potency and purity.
The RadRitual Difference As we mentioned before, CBD is booming and we're starting to see it popping up everywhere. It seems that every day ten new CBD brands or products are trying to make their space in the expanding market. This is exciting, but also challenging because many of these brands don't care about all of the information provided above and just see CBD as a trending or lucrative label to add to their brand. Because it is still so new, especially in the Beauty industry, labeling is still largely like the wild west. Brands can slap CBD or Cannabis onto their label without actually including any cannabinoids and in reality just putting some hempseed oil in their formula. No tea or shade to these brands and many others like them, we are just shedding light on a greater issue in the cannabis world in that many brands are using misleading, buzzword focused marketing to sell products with hempseed oil. Hempseed oil alone is great for things like moisturizing and providing omega fatty acids and the like, but it does not offer any of the medicinal or therapeutic healing benefits that real cannabinoids do. Putting hempseed oil into a product does not infuse it with CBD's benefits. You have to actually have the cannabinoids in there. These brands have realized that weed is like sex, and sex sells. The difficult part for the companies actually working with real cannabinoids is that this kind of marketing just creates confusion and misleading impressions in the growing CBD market. People will spend their money on a product advertising CBD or Cannabis-rich oil thinking they're getting all these great benefit and then never experience them.
Our brand is founded on the pillars of quality, transparency & result-driven formulations. We use real, lab formulated and tested CBD isolate in quantities significant enough to make a difference. Our lab-developed CBD formula is nanotized and combined with MCT oil, which means the molecules absorb fast & completely into the skin and through to the endocannabinoid system that we learned about earlier on. Our formulas are made to give visible results to the skin, as well as felt results to the physiological systems our cannabinoids interact with. We clearly label how much CBD is present in each product and can always provide percentages and proof of what our labels claim. It is so important in a world of trick or gimmick marketing to stand out and hold true to integrity of both the brand values and the products themselves.
To us, CBD and cannabis is not just a trend or hot button word. It is a scientific, medicinally proven ingredient that changes lives for the better and we built our brand to showcase that. We're not here for the money grab, we're here for the people who can't go outside comfortably without covering their skin with makeup. We're here for the people suffering every month from a hate-relationship with their periods. We're here to make people fall in love with their skin, all while diminishing anxiety, depression, inflammation and more through a self-care ritual using beautifully crafted, indulgent products.
